History of Harrington Elementary

Harrington Elementary School is named in honor of Collin County native J.A. “Fred” Harrington (1874–1957), the grandson of early Plano pioneer Alfred Harrington. Deeply rooted in the community, Harrington carried forward his family’s legacy of service and dedication to the growth of the area.

Fred Harrington was educated at Plano Institute and later attended the University of Texas. He built a life centered on agriculture, working as a farmer while remaining actively involved in civic and educational initiatives. From 1917 to 1921, he served on the Plano Independent School District Board of Trustees, contributing to the development and advancement of local education during a formative time in the district’s history.

In addition to his work in education, Harrington played an important role in the local business community. He was a director of the First National Bank beginning in 1930, helping support economic growth and stability in Plano and the surrounding region.

Harrington Elementary School, constructed in 1978, stands as a tribute to his lasting impact. The school continues to reflect his commitment to community, education, and service—values that remain at the heart of Harrington Elementary today.
